Trench Decay: Best Loadout by Mode

Last updated 2026-10-10Unofficial player article

Distinguish preset Defense kits from custom Inventory loadouts, then assign each available slot a useful role without copying mode-specific limits.

Build a Trench Decay loadout for the mode you are entering. Modern Defense uses class-specific preset kits, while Classic Defense and Offensive use custom lobby Inventory kits. A Defense Medic's Primary, Secondary, and Melee slots are a specific example, not a universal inventory limit.

This related gameplay video provides context for the campaign and equipment decisions below.

Identify which kit system the mode uses

A guide showing a custom Inventory setup does not automatically describe a class-specific Defense kit. Start with the mode, then decide what you can actually change. Otherwise you may plan a gun combination that belongs to a different kind of session.

Treat a preset class kit as a role choice. If you want recovery support, choose that contribution deliberately instead of expecting the preset to behave like an unrestricted custom loadout. For a custom kit, choose equipment that covers the jobs you expect to perform.

Give each available slot a purpose

The Defense Medic example has Primary, Secondary, and Melee. Use that example to understand complementary jobs, not to claim every class or mode shares exactly three slots. Your main weapon should handle the fight you expect most, while the other equipment should solve a different problem.

Avoid filling a kit with several unfamiliar choices at once. A weapon combination is easier to use when you understand why each piece is there. Keep the strongest part of a working kit and change the item that does not contribute.

Choose comfort before copying an expensive setup

A copied loadout may rely on a role or mode you are not using. Preserve the principle behind it instead: a clear main combat job and equipment that complements it. Do not make a bundle purchase solely because its items appear together in someone else's demonstration.

When a fight goes badly, distinguish the wrong kit system from a handling problem. A custom Inventory change cannot fix a preset you were never allowed to edit, and changing an entire kit is a poor answer to one weapon you simply find awkward.

Loadout questions

Is three slots the limit everywhere?

Are Offensive kits the same as Modern Defense?

No. Their kit ownership differs.

What should I read when choosing individual equipment?

Use the weapon directory to compare families before committing to a purchase.
